Who makes the registration?
Czech National Bank
Who needs the registration?
All legal persons that wish to undertake activity which involves the collection of finances for the purpose of their common investment according to the investment strategy set out in the QIF statutes. Such parties are obliged to have themselves registered in the register of qualified investor funds kept by the Czech National Bank according to Act No. 240/2013 Coll., on Investment Companies and Investment Funds. The minimum investment in QIF is CZK 1 million.
We distinguish between the following QIF:
- Non-autonomous - the investment company deals with the management and administration of the QIF. This solution is appropriate for parties that want to fully devote themselves to achievement of the investment strategy and do not want to deal with the administration and regulatory issues of the Czech National Bank associated with fund management.
- Autonomous - the management and, sometimes, the administration of the QIF is done by the party itself, or via outsourcing. Founders of the QIF have the fund more under their own control, but in addition to the management of assets they need to deal with the administration and regulatory issues involved in fund management. Autonomous QIF management might be a bit cheaper than management by an investment company, but as a rule not significantly so. An autonomous fund must comply with regulatory requirements in many aspects, requirements which are otherwise placed on the investment company. These are primarily compliance with personnel and capital requirements, risk management, compliance, and internal auditing.
What can a QIF invest in?
A QIF may invest in any assets, principally:
- investment instruments (shares, bonds, funds, ETF, etc.)
- derivatives (CFD, options, futures, leveraged investment instruments and securities, etc.)
- commodities (gold, silver, crude oil, etc.)
- real estate (directly, SPV real estate, etc.)
- crypto assets (directly BTC, LTC, ETH, etc., through derivatives)
- collector’s items (collections of paintings, stamps, coins, vintage cars, etc.)
- any other assets that can be held and valued and which the depository and the investment company accept
